12w38a is the sixth snapshot for Java Edition 1.4.2, released on September 20, 2012.[1]

Additions

Mobs

Bats

  • A passive mob.
  • Spawns in dark caves.
  • Spawns in Peaceful difficulty.
  • Sleeps during the day.
  • Hangs on the ceiling when idle, starts flying when players come near.
  • A corresponding spawn egg is provided in Creative mode.

Witches

  • A hostile mob.
  • Its nose slowly bobs up and down when not hostile.
  • Throws splash potions of Poison, Slowness, Weakness, and Instant Damage at the player.
  • Regenerates health over time.
  • Hold a glass bottle and raise their noses when attacking.
  • Drink potions of Instant Health and Fire Resistance to defend themselves in combat.
  • Rarely drop potions of Instant Health and Fire Resistance.
  • Is 85% resistant to damage from magic, including Poison, Instant Damage, and Thorns, but not Strength, Sharpness, or Power.
  • Does not spawn naturally (yet), but a spawn egg exists for it in Creative mode.

Target selectors

  • Target parameters have been upgraded.
    • These can be added after the @ selector in brackets.
    • x: X coordinate of search center
    • y: Y coordinate of search center
    • z: Z coordinate of search center
    • r: range, 0 means no range limit
      • There is a short syntax for x,y,z,r options
    • m: gamemode, -1 means no gamemode limit
    • c: count, 0 means no count limit, -c returns results from end to start.
      • Example: @p[c=-1] targets the furthest player.

  • The water overlay is more saturated blue.
  • Flowing water now has constant noise.

  • New sounds when a player tills dirt.

Gameplay

Creative mode

  • Teleportation is now instantaneous.

Experience

  • Added a level up sound.
    • Will be changed later for a shorter one.[2]

  • Updated and added new sounds by C418.

Commands

  • Added item argument to /clear.
  • Added commandBlockOutput to /gamerule.
  • Items obtained by /give are now given directly to the player instead of being dropped around them.

Fixes

4 bugs fixed

  • Item frames no longer despawn when the player moves 20 blocks away.
  • Fixed entities losing momentum when going through portals.
  • Fixed the "Bottomless Pit" superflat preset having the wrong blocks.
  • Fixed not receiving a fishing rod when the carrot on a stick is used up.
