This guide is a simplified overview of all the changes in the Frostburn Update (Java Edition 1.10.x releases), which assumes at least some familiarity with the Combat Update (Java Edition 1.9.x releases).

Mobs

New

Polar bear
Spawns in ice plains, ice mountains and ice plains spikes biomes.
  • Can swim fast in water.
  • When hit, the adults attack the player, and the cubs run away.
  • Adults always attack the player when cubs are around.
  • Cubs follow adults.
Husk
80% of zombies spawned under the sky in desert, desert hills and desert M biomes are husks.

Spawned equipment

  • Behaves like a normal zombie.
  • Doesn't burn in sunlight.
  • Applies Hunger when attacking.
    • Hunger is only applied if husk has an empty hand.
Stray
80% of skeletons spawned under the sky in ice plains, ice mountains and ice plains spikes biomes are strays.

Spawned equipment

  • Behaves like a normal skeleton.
  • Shoots arrows of Slowness (0:30) at the target.

Changed

Pickaxe
  • Mobs and players take 1HP♥ damage every second while standing on the magma blocks.

Mesa
  • Hardened clay no longer generates more than 15 blocks deep, if the mesa is more than 15 blocks above sea level.
  • In addition to the normal 2 blobs of gold ore below Y=32, it also attempts to generate 20 blobs between Y=32 and Y=79.

Structures

Fossil
Generates underground in deserts, swamplands, and their M and hills variants. Fossils look like the skulls and spines of giant extinct creatures.
Mesa mineshaft
Mineshafts in mesa generate differently now.
  • The midpoint of a mesa mineshaft is near sea level.
  • Uses dark oak wood for wooden structures.
Taiga village
Villages made from spruce wood can generate in taiga biomes. Similar to other village types, but made from different materials.
Zombie village
Villages have a small chance of generating as a zombie village.

Mineshaft
  • Features generate differently if above ground.
    • Cave spider spawners no longer generate if sky light is 8 or more.
    • Wooden structures no longer generate if above is air or sky light is 8 or more.
    • Rails in corridors are more complete if sky light is below 8.
Village
  • No longer restricted by biome boundaries, meaning that a village that starts in a valid biome can now spread into an adjacent invalid biome.
  • Now generates in taigas (but not variants).
  • Village structures are now made with the wood type of that biome.
    • In savanna villages, acacia log is used instead of cobblestone.
    • Blacksmiths and churches always use cobblestone.
  • Paths are now made with different material depending on the existing terrain.
    • If replacing grass blocks, the path is made from grass path.
    • If replacing water or lava, the path is made from planks.
    • If replacing sand, sandstone, or red sandstone, the path is gravel on top of cobblestone.
      • In desert villages, sandstone is used instead of gravel and cobblestone.
Huge mushroom Now has a chance of generating twice as tall as normal.
Cave No longer turn adjacent sand blocks in the ceiling into sandstone when generating.
End portal Now replaces all blocks inside the portal frame ring when activating.

Gameplay

New

Name Description
Auto-jump Automatically makes the player jump when running towards a one-block-tall obstacle.
