This guide is a simplified overview of all the changes in the Java Edition Classic releases, which assumes at least some familiarity with Pre-Classic releases.

Mobs

New

Name Image Habitat Drops Note
Creeper Everywhere None Melee attacks players and explodes when killed. Will take damage and eventually die (and thus explode) when touching the player.
Skeleton Everywhere None, but will spawn 4-6 arrows upon death that CAN be picked up and used. Attacks by shooting purple arrows. These cannot be picked up. Will not retaliate against other skeleton's shots unlike other mobs.
Zombie Everywhere None Melee attacks players.
Pig Everywhere The first passive mob.
Spider Everywhere None Melee attacks players.
Sheep Everywhere Drops white cloth when punched. Glitches exist in these versions in which magenta or red cloth may be dropped.

Blocks

New

Name Image Obtaining Tool Required Uses
Bedrock Generates at the bottom of the world. Cannot be broken. Unbreakable.
Water Generates in the ocean surrounding levels, and in lakes. One heart of damage is taken every half-second when the player starts drowning. Sponge Infinitely spreads downwards and outwards.
Lava Generates in lava lakes Any Infinitely spreads downwards and outwards. Will deal five hearts of damage every 0.5 second to a player in it. Thus, it is extremely difficult to survive falling in it.
Sand Generates near water Any Building material. Teleports to lowest area under itself.
Gravel Generates near water Any Building material, same behavior as sand.
Coal ore Generates underground. In later versions of Classic, must be obtained from the Creative inventory due to it dropping 1-3 Smooth Stone Slabs. Any Building material
Iron ore Generates underground, in later versions, must be obtained by the Creative inventory as it drops 1-3 Iron Blocks. Any, takes slightly longer than average to break. Building material
Gold ore Generates underground, in later versions, must be obtained from Creative inventory due to it dropping 1-3 Gold Blocks. Any, takes very slightly longer than average to break. Building material
Wood Generates on trees. Must be obtained from Creative inventory due to it dropping 3-5 Oak Planks. Any Building material. Often would drop nothing before 0.30 due to a bug.
Leaves Generate on trees, must be obtained from the Creative inventory if wanted in item form. Any Transparent building material, can drop saplings (10% chance)
Glass Creative inventory Any, weak and easy to break. Transparent building material. Will actually drop itself when broken unlike in Indev and after.
Sponge Creative inventory Any Creates a 5×5 cube around it in which water cannot exist.
Rose Generates on grass Any Decorative object
Flower Generates on grass Any Decorative object
Red mushroom Generates in caves Any Deals 3 damage when consumed.
Brown mushroom Generates in caves, renewable as Sheep and Pigs drop 0-2 of them. Any Restores 5 health when consumed.
Block of gold Creative inventory, or from Gold Ore Any, takes a little longer to break than average. Building material
Block of iron Creative inventory, or from Iron Ore Any, takes a while to break compared to other blocks. Building material. Strong and resilient.
Stone slab Creative inventory, or from Coal Ore. Any The first slab in the game, and will remain the only slab until Beta 1.3.
TNT Creative inventory Any Explodes when punched. In the final versions of Classic, punching it again cancels the detonation.
Moss stone Creative inventory Any Building material. Somewhat resilient to explosions.
Bricks Creative inventory Any Building material. Semi-resilient.
Bookshelf Creative inventory. Drops nothing when broken. Any Building material
Obsidian Creative inventory, degrades into 1 Cobblestone when broken. Any, takes about 5 whole seconds to break, MUCH more than any other block. Building material, extremely strong and resilient. Takes a VERY long time to break compared to most blocks.
Cloth Creative inventory, except white. (Red and magenta are obtainable through glitches.) Any Building material

Gameplay

New

Name Description
Multiplayer Multiple players can now join the same world together and interact with each other.
Health It is now possible to take damage, heal yourself, and die. You cannot respawn yet.
