Java Edition 1.5/Development versions

This is a list of Java Edition 1.5 development versions.

13w01a

13w01a is the first snapshot for Java Edition 1.5, released on January 3, 2013.[1] It mainly added an assortment of new redstone components. This is the first snapshot released in 2013.

Additions

Blocks

Block of redstone

  • Stores redstone dust similar to blocks of diamond, etc.
  • Emits constant redstone power.
  • Works as a pushable redstone power source.

Daylight sensors

  • Output power while receiving sunlight.
  • The level varies depending on the time (more sunlight = more redstone power), and it does not function at night.

Hoppers

Nether quartz ore

Redstone comparator

  • Has 3 inputs and 1 output. Input from the back is considered signal A, and whichever side gives the stronger signal is considered signal B.
  • Has 2 modes: comparison and subtraction.
  • In comparison mode, if A≥B, the output is A, otherwise output stays off.
  • In subtraction mode, if A≥B, the output is A-B, otherwise output stays off.
  • Replacement for the "capacitor" idea.

Trapped chests

  • Gives out a signal depending on the amount of players looking inside. 1 player = 1 strength signal, 2 players = 2, etc.
  • Crafted with a chest and a tripwire hook.
  • Large trapped chests can be staggered with large chests to allow more compact storage.
  • Texture is slightly different than a normal chest, with a red stain around the latch.

Weighted pressure plates

  • Detects item stacks.
  • Gold version reaches full strength at 60 items.
  • Iron version reaches full strength at 600 items.
  • Linear, so 10 strength signal means twice as many items as a 5 strength signal.

Items

Nether quartz

Changes

Blocks

Locked chests

  • Texture for the block was changed from .

Pistons

  • Are more stable from previous versions.
    • Sticky pistons are less sticky.

Redstone circuits

  • Are now more consistent.

Items

General

  • Now shows the item name in-game.

Gameplay

Death messages

  • Now show the weapon someone was killed with.

Inventory management

  • Double-click items to fill the stack up as much as possible.
  • Drag item stacks around to divide them up over the dragged-over slots.
  • Drag item stacks around with the right mouse button to place one of that stack in each dragged-over slot, if that slot is not occupied already.
  • Shift double-click an item stack to move all other item stacks of that kind to that part of the inventory.
  • Press Q while the mouse is over an item in the inventory or a container to drop it.

Bugs

  • [MC-5711] Redstone torches attached to the side of a block do not pop off if the block supporting them is destroyed.
  • [MC-5721] Dragging to spread an item out in the Creative inventory, then clicking on the inventory tab, and placing the 0 stack item down, the game crashes.
  • [MC-5728] Infinite loop caused by subtraction mode comparators causes the world to be unplayable.
  • Mineral duplication: players can exponentially dupe minerals by putting then in a crafting table with a block of their material, then double clicking on a mineral in the crafting table, works on the same principle as the method below.
  • Crafted item duplication: any stackable crafted item can be duplicated by setting up its recipe in a crafting table, then double clicking an existing version of this item in the inventory. Requires at least one of that item to be present in the inventory.

Fixes

3 issues fixed

From released versions before Java Edition 1.5

  • MC-177[12w26a] Clocked piston arm turns invisible when exiting game/dying/etc.
  • MC-184[Beta 1.2] (Powered) redstone doesn't update right.
  • MC-5621[Beta 1.7] Blocks like redstone dust, repeaters, doors, and levers don't drop when the underlying block is pushed by a piston.

13w01b

13w01b is the second snapshot for Java Edition 1.5, released on January 4, 2013[2] to fix some of the bugs and crashes in the 13w01a snapshot.

Changes

Blocks

Chests

  • All containers output a redstone signal when a comparator is placed against it directly.
    • The strength of it depends on how full the container is.[3]
  • This works with trapped chests as well, meaning it can provide two redstone signals with different causes at the same time.

An experimental version of 13w02a was released by Dinnerbone on Mojira to try to fix an issue with white textures.[5]

Additions

Blocks

Activator rails

  • Used to trigger minecarts with TNT.
  • Need to be powered by redstone.
  • Transmit power up to 8 activator rails far.
  • Crafted the same way as normal rails except without a stick in the middle.

Block of quartz

  • New building block.
  • Made by using 4 pieces of nether quartz in a square.

Chiseled quartz block

  • New building block.
  • Crafting recipe is 2 quartz slabs vertically.

Pillar quartz block

  • New building block.
  • Crafting recipe is 2 blocks of quartz vertically.

Quartz stairs

  • New stair block.
  • Crafting recipe is the same except that it is made out of any quartz block.

Quartz slabs

  • New slab block.
  • Crafting recipe is the same except that it is made out of any quartz block.

Non-mob entities

Minecart with TNT

  • Triggered by activator rails.
  • Crafting recipe is a TNT block on top of a minecart (allowing for creation in the 2×2 inventory).
  • When it derails, it explodes instantly, ignoring the usual timer delay.
  • Explodes even more violently the faster it goes.
  • In Creative mode, when left clicked while moving, the minecart with TNT explodes.

Gameplay

Death messages

  • Now includes the cause of death, the player the deceased player was fighting at time of death, and the name of the item used to kill.
  • For death messages for fall damage, a complicated system was introduced.
    • There are now two types of messages, "[player] <first>" and "[player] <first> and <last>".
      • <first> can be:
        • fell [off a ladder/off some vines/out of the water/fell from a high place]
        • was [shot/pummeled/blown/fireballed/knocked] [off a ladder/off some vines/out of the water/from a high place]
        • was [shot/pummeled/blown/fireballed/knocked] [off a ladder/off some vines/out of the water/from a high place] by [player/mob]
      • <last> can be:
        • into a pool of lava
        • fell out of the world
        • into a patch of fire
        • into a patch of cacti
        • got finished off by [player/mob]
        • got finished off by [player/mob] using [item]
        • got finished off using [item]
    • There are 352 different death messages for falling. (Technically there are 416 because the verb "blown" exists twice in the en_US.lang file.)

Changes

This section is missing information about: ID changes for empty minecarts and minecart with furnace/chest.

Please expand the section to include this information. Further details may exist on the talk page.

Blocks

Anvils

  • Improved naming of containers.
    • Renamed chests, trapped chests, dispensers, furnaces, brewing stands, and enchantment tables display the new name in their GUI where the normal name used to appear.

Hoppers

  • Is now controllable by redstone – players can power it to disable item forwarding.
  • Added a proper icon.
  • Is no longer considered wooden (cannot be used as a fuel in a furnace, etc.).
  • New crafting recipe uses iron ingots rather than stone.
  • The redstone signal emitted when a redstone comparator is placed against it directly has changed.
    • 1 item gives a signal strength of 1, a 1/3 of a stack (21 for items which stack to 64) gives a signal strength of 2.
    • The number of full stacks x 3 = signal strength.
    • E.g. 2 stacks of an item/block give a signal strength of 6, while 2 potions also give a signal strength of 6 (because a potion occupies one stack).

Lava

  • Changed textures.

Redstone comparator

  • Updated texture.
  • When fed by containers, they now start giving out a signal as soon as 1 item is in the container, allowing for empty container detection.

Slabs

Trapped chests

Mobs

General

  • Improved naming of spawn eggs.
    • Mobs spawned from renamed eggs have the name of the egg and the names appear in the death message.
    • Mobs can now display their custom name as nametag using NBT data.

Skeletons

  • Improved aiming.
  • Now shoots from 15 blocks away, instead of 10.
  • Accuracy changes with difficulty.

World generation

Mineshafts

Gameplay

Language

  • Updated language files.
    • Language files can now be updated via the background downloader (no need for a new Minecraft release).

Missing textures and models

Texture packs

  • Textures now use one file per block/item, which are stitched together at runtime – texture sizes don't need to be consistent.
  • Any block and item can be animated by putting the frames underneath each other in the right .png – player can use an optional .txt to specify frame order and duration.
  • Textures for animated blocks or items (water, lava, fire, nether portal, compass and clock) are no longer procedurally generated, and now have their own texture files.
  • Existing texture packs are "automagically" converted.
  • Vanilla textures are used if texture files are missing.

Changes

Blocks

Activator rails

Chests

  • Large/double chests can now release a redstone signal when connected to a comparator depending on the number of stacks within.
    • Before, double chests would only emit a signal depending on how full each individual chest was (a double chest with only the top half full would emit a full signal from the side that the items were in).

Hoppers

  • Powering the block now also stops it from taking in items (see comparison between 13w02a and 13w02b).[8]

Trapped chests

  • Can now transmit signal downward through one block. This does not apply horizontally (through walls).[9]
