History

Java Edition Beta
1.3 A precursor and precedent for smooth stone exists in the double form of seamless stone slabs; information on this block is documented on that specific page.
Java Edition
1.513w02aSeamless stone double slabs have been removed from the game as of this version by way of replacement with many slab types; see the page linked above for more specific "removal" versions.
January 22, 2013Jeb says that smooth stone will be reintroduced, also hinting at the introduction of smooth sandstone.
January 22, 2013Jeb says that smooth stone may become legitimately obtainable as a block in the future.
13w04aReintroduced smooth stone officially; it now acts much like a stone double slab, and drops two regular smooth stone slabs (then known simply as stone slabs) when broken.
1.1317w47aSmooth stone has now been given its current name; previously it would have been referred to in-game simply as "Stone Slab".
Smooth stone has been added to the Creative inventory.
Smooth stone now drops itself when mined with a pickaxe, rather than two smooth stone slabs.
1.1418w43aSmooth stone can now be obtained by smelting stone.
The texture of smooth stone has been changed.
Smooth stone is now used to craft smooth stone slabs (the slab types simply known as "stone slabs" before this version). They are no longer crafted from normal stone, as that recipe now yields new proper stone slabs which actually look like stone.
18w48aSmooth stone now generates in the updated plains villages.
18w49aSmooth stone now generates in the updated savanna villages and the new snowy tundra villages.
Smooth stone can now be found in chests in village mason houses.
18w50aSmooth stone can now be used to craft blast furnaces.
1.2023w12aSmooth stone now generates in trail ruins.

Data history

Java Edition
1.513w02aPrior to this version, seamless stone double slabs (smooth stone's predecessor) existed as block 43 metadata 7 or 15. In this version, this was replaced by the quartz slab.
January 22, 2013Jeb details the future introduction of seamless slab types as a metadata variant of normal slabs; if a double slab block's metadata is 8 or higher, the top texture will be used on the side faces and bottom face as well.
13w04aDouble slab blocks have been intentionally changed such that double slabs with metadata 8-15 look identical to those with 0-7, except that they use the top texture on all sides instead. As a result, smooth stone has been reintroduced to the game with metadata value 8.
1.1317w47aPrior to The Flattening, this block's numeral ID was 43.
