A pickaxe is a tool that is required to mine most types of stone, ore, and blocks crafted from stone or ore. Unlike other tools, the tier of pickaxe determines which blocks it can mine successfully.
Variants
There are seven pickaxe variants:
Wooden Pickaxe
Golden Pickaxe
Stone Pickaxe
Copper Pickaxe
Iron Pickaxe
Diamond Pickaxe
Netherite Pickaxe
Obtaining
Crafting
Wooden, golden, stone, copper, iron, and diamond pickaxes are crafted using two sticks and three of the tier’s material.

Usage
Mining
A pickaxe is used to break stone-based and metal-based materials faster. Different qualities of pickaxe are required to successfully harvest certain ores and blocks. For example, while stone can be mined with any pickaxe, gold ore must be mined with an iron pickaxe, diamond pickaxe, or netherite pickaxe, or else the player harvests no item.
Durability
Each tier of pickaxe has a different Durability, or number of uses, based on the type. Breaking a block with a pickaxe consumes one durability point. No durability is consumed for blocks that break instantly, like torches and flowers.
The following table shows the number of uses per pickaxe type:
| Material | in Java Edition | in Bedrock Edition |
|---|---|---|
| 59 | 60 | |
| 32 | 33 | |
| 131 | 132 | |
| — | 191 | |
| 250 | 251 | |
| 1561 | 1562 | |
| 2031 | 2032 |
Speed
Different pickaxes also mine many materials at different speeds. The following table shows the number of seconds required to break each type of block:
- A red background indicates that the block is being mined with an improper tool; this applies a penalty to the breaking time and causes the block to drop nothing.
- A yellow background indicates that the block is being mined with the proper type of pickaxe, but does not drop itself (it drops nothing or another item).
- A green background indicates that the block is being mined with the proper type of pickaxe and drops itself.

Weapon
A pickaxe loses 2 points of durability when used as a weapon. Pickaxes may be used as a weapon, and in Java Edition, they have an attack speed higher than that of an axe, mace, shovel, or trident, but lower than that of a sword.
Java Edition
Pickaxes have an attack speed of 1.2 and take 0.85 seconds to recover.

- ↑ The formula to find the total lifetime damage is
ceil(durability ÷ 2) × damage per hit. The durability is halved then ceiled because pickaxes take double durability when used as a weapon, and the last 1 durability can also deal damage. The formula also ignores enchantments and critical hits, and assumes each attack is performed at maximum charge.
Bedrock Edition
In Bedrock Edition, pickaxes have no attack cooldown, and deal the following damage:
| Material | |||||||
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Attack Damage | 3HP | 3HP | 4HP | 4HP | 5HP | 6HP | 7HP |

Enchantments
A pickaxe can receive the following enchantments:
| Name | Description | Max Level | Method | Weight |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Efficiency | Increases the mining speed. | V | 10 | |
