Rarity

For rarity in other games, see Earth:Rarity and Dungeons:Rarity.
"Rarity" redirects here. For the Character Creator, see Character Creator § Rarity.

Rarity is a statistic applied to items and blocks to signify their value and ease in obtaining. It has no effect on gameplay whatsoever.

There are four rarity tiers: Common, Uncommon, Rare, and Epic. The rarity of the items depends on the difficulty of getting an item, the time it takes to obtain the item and the ingredients of crafting the item.

Rarity of an item can be increased through enchantments, bringing its rarity from Common or Uncommon to Rare, or from Rare to Epic. The rarity of an item does not necessarily reflect on the actual practical difficulty of obtainment: the rare wither skeleton head is simply a rare drop (1 in 40), while the other heads, especially the piglin head, are uncommon but require very specific setup and a rare charged creeper. The uncommon netherite upgrade is required to convert common diamond equipment into common netherite equipment.

Displaying

Please expand the section to include this information. Further details may exist on the talk page.

Rarity is intended to display anywhere the item name does.

In Java Edition, it is shown in the following situations:

  • Item tooltips in the inventory
  • Item tooltips above the hotbar
  • Death messages or /give command in chat

In Java Edition, rarity colors do not display in the following cases:

Tiers

According to Mojang, the rarity tier of an item is determined based on the following guidelines:[6][7]

  • Items and blocks become more rare depending on the following factors:
    • The chance of finding it in a loot table, including mob drops
    • The amount of travelling required to obtain it
    • The difficulty of any obstacle which must be overcome to obtain it
    • The possible amount of that item or block which exists in the world
  • Any item or block which can be crafted must inherit the highest rarity of its crafting ingredients
    • For example, a Mace has an Epic rarity because one of its ingredients (the Heavy Core) has an Epic rarity
    • Likewise, any crafted item which has only Common crafting ingredients must also be Common

Common

This rarity applies to all items that don't have a dedicated rarity tier.

Uncommon

This tier mostly contains easier-to-obtain treasure items and materials, as well as some useful equipment.

Rare

This tier mostly contains rare treasures, materials, and equipment that require more effort to obtain.

Epic

This tier is mostly reserved for extremely difficult-to-obtain treasures and powerful equipment. In Java Edition, most administrative items also belong here.
