It has been suggested that this page be moved to List of block colors.
If this move affects many pages or may potentially be controversial, do not move the page until a consensus is reached.

Reason: might be a good idea to create a dedicated page for how exactly the colors are applied
When moving, be sure to use the appropriate tool instead of simply copying and pasting the page's contents, to preserve edit history.

History

This section is missing information about:
  • For biomes that existed in 1.6.4 excluding swamps, did their colors change in 1.7.2? Currently assuming that they stayed the same - please notify of any found changes
  • Assorted bugs to maybe document: MC-47598, MC-2075, MC-6742, MC-20944, MC-30630, MC-47796
  • Research the phenomenon shown in File:Frozen ocean color difference.png, when it was added and removed, and if any other biomes are affected
  • Many images are already uploaded but must be added to this section - I need to figure it out
  • Bedrock Editions swamp color before Update Aquatic
  • Minecraft 2.0 did in fact use a color on a single texture to create the different tinted glass colors
  • Possibly potion cauldrons in b1.9-pre2? They appeared to use colored lava
  • colors associated with biomes removed in 1.18.

Please expand the section to include this information. Further details may exist on the talk page.
Java Edition Alpha
v1.2.0preview The top texture of grass blocks and snowy grass blocks and texture of leaves has been changed.
The texture are now grayscale and are affected by biome colors. For each biome, there are several shades and a total number of unique colors is 4662 for grass and 6567 for leaves (if change every pixel in grass.png and foliage to unique color that total number of unique colors is 32 896 for grass and 32 896 for leaves).
Java Edition Beta
1.2Added birch leaves and spruce leaves, which use a constant color regardless of biome.
1.3 Redstone wire now uses a system of colors in order to display a different color for each power level, rather than rendering everything which was on at full brightness.
1.5 The colors used by redstone wire have changed for unpowered redstone wire, from
 #000000
to
 #4B0000
.
The model of grass blocks now use overlay texture on side faces when "Graphics: Fancy" is set in options. The texture is grayscale and is affected by biome colors.
Grass blocks use old model when "Graphics: Fast" is set in options.
1.6Test Build 3Added grass and ferns, which are affected by biome coloring.
1.8Pre-releaseAdded vines, which are affected by biome coloring.
Major changes to biomes have resulted in major changes to the colors used.
Added pumpkin stems and melon stems, which use a gray texture that is afterward colored depending on age from 1-7.
Stems with ages 8-15, which are normally inaccessible, are also colored. The reason for these colors is the calculation of the RGB color values overlap in the game's code.
Java Edition
1.0.0Beta 1.9 Prerelease Added lily pads, which use a constant color of
 #208030
.
Water in swamps is now colored with
 #E0FF70
, which mixes with the blue texture.
The swamp grass and foliage colors has been changed to hard-coded colors
 #5C694E
and
 #496137
.
1.112w01a The water color in swamps (right) has changed to
 #E0FFAE
. Uncolored water to its left for comparison.
1.2.112w03aAdded jungle leaves, using the same colors as oak leaves.
1.4.212w34aAdded potted ferns, which are biome affected.
1.513w10aValues of the tall grass block higher than usually obtainable (shrub) now use the dead bush texture, although colored like others. See Block colors/Removed blocks and biomes#Green shrubs for a full list.
1.7.213w36aNew biomes, new colors and color related mechanics. The biomes added should probably be listed here, though, and some of those green shrubs above moved here.

Swamps now use two different colors depending on temperature.
Sugar cane is now biome colored.
Unintentionally added potted grass and potted green shrubs, which change color depending on biome. See Block colors/Removed blocks and biomes#Potted grass and green shrubs for a full list.
13w43aAdded acacia and dark oak leaves, which are colored by biome.
1.814w06aFlower pots now render a lot of the blocks that can be placed inside of them via NBT data. Among the now rendered are potted grass blocks (appearing as colored dirt) and potted leaves, which change color depending on the biome. See Block colors/Removed blocks and biomes#Potted leaves and vines for a full list.

Similarly to the data values used for tall grass, any of the leaves can be given either the predefined birch color or spruce color by modifying the data values accordingly.
14w06b

Potted vines, potted lily pads and potted water (uncolored left, swamp right) now also appear and are colored. See Block colors/Removed blocks and biomes#Potted leaves and vines for a full list of vines.
14w10a
The dirt on the sides of grass blocks is now also colored by biome.[2]
Shrubs have no model and this model is not colored.
14w10bThe sides of grass blocks are no longer colored.
14w17aAll nonstandard potted objects no longer render in flower pots.
1.1318w15aAdded the Biome Blending option.
Water now utilizes colors more extensively, with its texture being gray by default like other blocks and then colored as necessary.
The color used by swamp water has changed, and normal water now uses a non-blank color.
The color for Swamp Hills has not changed, resulting in the
 #E0FFAE
color intended to be mixed with the usual blue water being accidentally applied directly to a gray texture, resulting in chlorine-colored water.[3]
Added colors for new ocean temperatures.
Lava is now biome colored except the bottom face. This is linked to new biome coloring for water.[4]
18w16aLava is no longer biome colored.
18w20b Cauldrons now color contained water respective of biome.
pre3 Swampland M water now has the same water color as regular swamps.
1.1519w45aGrass and foliage colors no longer change alongside shifts in temperature, with the exception of swamps as defined previously.
?Snowy taigas now have a more appropiate water color.
Pocket Edition Alpha
Pre-release Added grass block, oak, birch and spruce leaves, all colored with
 #339933
.
v0.3.2 The colors of oak, birch and spruce leaves have been changed to
 #48B518
,
 #80A755
and
 #619961
.
v0.8.0build 1 The top texture of the grass block in block form is now colored with
 #87CD49
.
v0.9.0build 1 The top texture in block form now colored with biome colors. The side texture has been changed to various pre-colored textures dependent by biome.
