Walking

Walking is one of the fundamental methods of transportation in Minecraft, allowing for a reasonable movement speed while avoiding the hunger impact of sprinting, but without the fall safety of sneaking.
Performing
Walking is possible regardless of hunger level, and can be prevented only via obstruction from a hitbox with collision (most blocks and entities), with a sufficiently high level of Slowness or if the player is in Spectator Mode.
Keyboard
On a keyboard, walking is accomplished by pressing the assigned key to move forward, backward, left or right (W, S, A and D respectively). Multiple adjacent keys can also be used simultaneously to walk in a diagonal direction, but opposite keys cancel out.
Controller
On a controller, walking is accomplished by moving the joystick in the appropriate direction. The player walks at an angle equal to the angle of the joystick relative to the direction the camera is facing. A D-pad can also be used for keyboard movement.
Touchscreen
On a touchscreen, a virtual touch-based D-pad or joystick can be used. There is a setting in Settings > Controls > Touch to change this.
Usage
Walking is the most accessible form of transportation in the game. The player should try to only walk when there is no food available, since walking does not expend hunger points. However, the player can still lose hunger points when jumping. When the player has six or less hunger points, the player can no longer sprint and can only walk, if traveling on land.
Speed
The default walking speed is 4.317 blocks per second, and in Java Edition, this can be directly changed by the minecraft:movement_speed attribute (in which the default base value is 0.1). However, the speed can also be affected by several factors, such as blocks, effects, using an item and enchantments.

The majority of land-based mobs move via walking.
