A piglin is a race of pig-like humanoids featured as the primary antagonists in A Minecraft Movie. They originate from and reside in the Nether, and are lead by Malgosha.

Appearance

The piglins are anatomically similar to other humanoids like zombies and villagers, having two long column-like legs, thinner dexterous arms, and big cubic heads. They also share a lot in common with the Overworld's pigs, possessing flat snouts, floppy ears, and nougat colored skin with a thin layer of light grey fur. Unlike either of the aforementioned groups though, piglins exhibit burning bright eyes, nasty rectangular tusks, and three hoofed fingers on their hands. In addition, they also have noticeable mammary glands.

Behavior

Piglins are portrayed as having unique individualized personalities and behaviors, seemingly nothing more than a group of people simply oppressed under an abusive dictator, and are described as being more stupid than evil. As a unit, however, piglins are considered an uncreative society motivated by greed: they ravaged the Nether and depleted it of its natural resources, and now want to do the same the Overworld.

Powers and abilities

Piglins possess natural strength and are raised up to have combat capabilities. They are also shown to mine, tinker, and even have the capacity to create art, even if this particular ability is oppressed upon.

If stranded in the Overworld, piglins will begin withering away and zombifying into zombified piglins. It is unclear what process causes this to happen, but it can be negated by piglins consuming Nether wart or breathing in its spores.

Military

Utilizing swords, war hammers, crossbows, spears, and battleaxes, piglins have a wide arsenal of combative weapons, along with gold and netherite armor. They also possess militarized ghasts, hoglins, and even fireball launchers. The Great Hog himself is also considered a militaristic weapon, as the beast has no brain and only takes commands from Malgosha.

Biography

Late into Steve's adventures in the Overworld, he and his pet Dennis discovered a ruined Nether Portal. Upon lighting it with a flint and steel, the portal opened and Dennis entered without hesitation. Steve soon followed behind, and discovered the Nether. Alerted by his presence, Malgosha asks who Steve is and to give the Orb of Dominance to her. He refuses, and she orders the piglins to lock him and Dennis away. After Dennis escapes Steve's prison cell and returns to the Overworld with the Orb, a small party of piglins followed after him and soon discovered themselves zombifying in the Overworld's atmosphere. They managed to retrieve Dennis’s collar, which had fallen off, before being forced to retreat through the portal.

As the gang of misfits entered the Overworld, Malgosha was able to sense the return of the Orb of Dominance. This led to her sending General Chungus and his forces to find and retrieve the Orb from the group, along with providing them a limited supply of nether warts in the form of a potion to prevent them from zombifying. After Steve settles the group into Midport Village, General Chungus and his forces attack the village, killing villagers, livestock, and iron golem alike. As the piglins pursue after Henry, Garrett, and Steve, in their ghast balloons and hoglin mounts, they are outsmarted by the group and are killed in a massive fiery explosion. The rest of General Chungus's forces don't fair so well either, as all but Chungus himself found themselves zombified by the time they returned to Malgosha. She would then call upon the power of the brainless Great Hog, who she ordered to kill General Chungus, which the beast does with a blast from his arm cannon.

While on their way to the Woodland Mansion, Henry, Garrett, and Steve are ambushed by the Great Hog within Steve's old mineshaft, eventually blowing it up via Steve's creeper farm.

After Henry, Garrett, and Steve escape the Woodland Mansion with a new Earth Crystal, Malgosha arrives on a ghast alongside a large group of piglin reinforcements, including a recently-created New Hog. Malgosha steals the Orb of Dominance from the group, before ordering her piglin troops to blow them up using TNT. Henry and Steve barely make it out alive by hopping onto a ghast balloon to escape, whereas Garrett appears to have been killed by the explosion after fighting off piglins.

Malgosha has her piglin forces construct a massive Nether Portal, with an unfinished beacon placed atop the portal's peak. She orders Travis to place the Orb of Dominance inside the beacon, and after he does the beacon is transformed into a corrupted beacon that blots out the sun and begins the process of turning the Overworld into the Nether. Malgosha orders the piglin horde to pillage and destroy the villages of the Overworld, and then they'll begin their plans to mine the Overworld out for more gold. Before this can transpire however, Henry and Natalie build an army of iron golems to protect the Overworld from the piglins. As the golems and piglins battle, Malgosha sends in the Great Hog to fight against the Super Iron Golem. She was then confronted by a diamond armored Steve, who battles with her in a uniquely Steve way. As the Great Hog almost gains the upper hand against the super golem, Dawn joins the fight with a pack of wolves who attack the Great Hog. During the all-out war, Henry reaches the top of the Nether Portal using an ender pearl, and attempts to remove the Orb of Dominance from the corrupted beacon. Before he can safely do this, the Great Hog shoots at him and causes him to plummet off the side of the Nether Portal, but not before Garrett swings in and saves him via a ghast. Using the lift, they're able to knock the Orb of Dominance out of the corrupted beacon, causing the sun to return to normal. This causes the undead mobs to burn alive, and the piglins to begin zombifying. As this happens, the Great Hog attempts to retrieve the Orb of Dominance, but is quickly killed by the Super Iron Golem. As Malgosha zombifies along with the rest of her people, she attempts to double cross Steve three times before succumbing to her zombification and dying. The only known piglin survivors of this event are two young piglin servants who had nether warts on hand as the rest of their society died.

It is unclear what happened to piglin society after this, but they are immortalized as the primary enemies in the video game that Henry, Natalie, Garrett, Dawn, and Steve all develop together after returning to Earth.

Trivia

  • During the Young Sheldon A Minecraft Movie sweepstakes, piglins were incorrectly referred to as pigs.[3]
  • Several characteristics for the piglins in the film were taken from the piglins in Minecraft Legends. These include the Great Hog's name and appearance, piglins surviving in the Overworld via the use of Nether wart, Malgosha's similarities to the Seer, and her usage of the Orb of Dominance.
  • Many of the background piglins received specific names during production, designed to represent certain personalities.[4] Within the film itself, they go unnamed, though many of them received names during development. Certain ones had specific niches, including Archie wielding a crossbow, Brutea an axe, Oinkiver a torch, and Snortilla a hammer.
    • Trotsky, Snowball, Snortilla, and Wilbur ended up being used in A Minecraft Movie Live Event, reusing models from A Minecraft Movie: Add-on.
    • Several of their names appear to be either puns or references to external media. Chops is a pun on the term porkchop, while Oinkiver appears to be a portmanteau of the noise oink and Oliver. Snortilla rhymes with the word tortilla. Snowball, Napoleon, and (Steve) Squealer may be named after the pigs from the novel Animal Farm by George Orwell. Alternatively, Napoleon could be a reference to Napoleon Dynamite, a prior film by A Minecraft Movie's director, Jared Hess. Wilbur and Babe share names with the pig protagonists of Charlotte's Web and Babe. Trotsky's name is a likely reference to the politician Leon Trotsky who was assassinated using a pickaxe (which the piglin character wields).
  • In a behind the scenes video, piglins are described as cannibals.[5]
  • Unlike their Minecraft counterparts, the piglins in A Minecraft Movie have natural genders.
