A wolf is a cute and predatory canine-like creature.
Appearance
These mammalian predators are presented with a pale grey and brown coloration that greatly resembles that of Earth's wolves. Coming in at about 1.2 meters at the shoulders, wolves are large predatory animals with sharp teeth and forward facing eyes. They possess long legs with three toed feet, and a large mane of hair around their shoulders and back. They also have the ability to flush a red bioluminescent glow through their irises, seemingly as a sort of intimidation display.
Behavior
Wild wolves have an aggressive demeanor, and are predatory in nature and will stalk and attack prey in search of food, having great speed and agility to achieve their hunts. While in this aggressive state, wolves will possess red glowing eyes to appear more dangerous. However despite their true nature, wolves can easily be tamed by being provided a bone to gnaw on. After which, they will calm down from the aggressive behavior and allow their red eyes to relax into a deep brown color instead. A red collar will materialize around the wolf's neck and the wolf will become both loyal and loving towards it's owner.
Biography
During Steve's first few days/weeks in the Overworld, he finds himself cowering in fear within his pink house during an especially bad night where a horde of zombies attempt to break into his home. The sun soon rises and kills the undead horde in the process. As Steve leaves his house though, he realizes that the horde also consisted of an aggressive wolf unaffected by the sun's rays, who he described as wanting to eat him. Instead of running or hiding from the predator however, he picks up a bone that had dropped from one of the late horde's skeletons and presents it to the wolf, who happily accepts it. This tames the wolf and causes a collar to form around it's neck, where the collar reveals the wolf's name to be Dennis. From here Steve and Dennis become best friends, as the two build and play fetch together.
When Steve discovered a ruined obsidian gateway for the first time, he was accompanied by Dennis. As he lit the portal with a flint and steel, it activated and Dennis decided to jump through it on a whim. On the other side of the portal are the piglins, who are ordered to surround and capture Steve and Dennis by the piglin queen, Malgosha, who also confiscates the Orb of Dominance from Steve. While imprisoned, Steve orders Dennis to steal their piglin guard's keys, and they both escape from their cell. However, Steve isn't able to make it to the portal and orders Dennis to take the Orb of Dominance back to Earth and hide it underneath his bed at his old house. Dennis escapes the Nether, but becomes untamed in the process as he loses his collar during his hectic run to the Earth Portal. Dennis eventually succeeds in Steve's last request to him, but in doing so becomes stranded on Earth, continuing to live out an unknown amount of time in this foreign landscape.
As Henry, Natalie, Garrett Garrison, and Dawn Runcie enter the film, Dennis can be seen in multiple establishing shots on Earth roaming around their hometown of Chuglass, seemingly keeping an eye on the Orb of Dominance's whereabouts.
Later as the aforementioned cast enter the Overworld, Dennis is seen chasing after them through it, briefly crossing paths with the Nitwit as he enters Earth. From here Dennis continues to feature in multiple background and establishing shots within the Overworld.
A nondescript wolf eventually crosses paths with Natalie and Dawn while it was seemingly hunting. While Natalie is apprehensive at first, Dawn recognizes the merit in the wolf and shows it kindness as she accidently tames it with a bone, which causes the wolf to generate a collar around it's neck that informs Dawn that it is Steve's lost wolf, Dennis. Later reuniting Steve and Dennis at the mushroom house she would build that night.
This leads to Dawn's role in the final fight, where she tames a whole pack of wolves to attack the invading piglin army.
During the final moments of the film, Dawn asks Steve if he is okay with allowing her to take custody of Dennis. After a heartfelt song in which Steve proclaims his love for Dennis and telling him to go change more lives, it is seen that Dennis became a notable and popular attraction at Dawn's roadside zoo.
Trivia
- The wolf's red bioluminescent eyes are a direct reference to the wolf's angry texture featured in Minecraft, which the wolf only takes on while hunting or provoked.
- The collar that materializes around a tamed wolf's neck is referencing how tamed wolves in Minecraft will generate a new texture with a collar around their neck after being tamed, where the collar seemingly materializes out of nothing. While this likely isn't intended to be literal, the A Minecraft Movie took it and many other gameplay limitations to help inform it's worldbuilding.
