The Orb of Dominance is an item that appears in A Minecraft Movie, utilized by Malgosha to unleash the Great Darkening.

Appearance

The Orb is a glowing light blue cube that can be combined with the Earth crystal to open a portal to the Earth dimension.

Unlike other games in the franchise, the Orb has a transparent blue color.

The Orb is able to open the Earth portal if inserted into the Earth crystal.

When inserted into a beacon, it can turn it into a night beacon, which will turn the skies dark no matter what time of day it is and make it possible for piglins to survive in the Overworld.

The Orb is shown to be able to take heavy abuse and not sustain any damage, such as when it is hit by a ghast fireball.

History

The Orb was at one point in the Nether, likely in Malgosha's possession, but somehow made its way to Earth. It, along with the Earth crystal, was later dug up in the mine near Chuglass, Idaho by Steve, who was transported to the Overworld shortly thereafter. Eventually, Steve took it into the Nether, where Malgosha promptly seized it. It was lost soon after when Dennis escaped from prison, went back to Earth, and hid it beneath Steve’s bed.

Later, after Steve’s belongings were placed in a storage unit, Garrett purchased the unit, believing there was an Atari Cosmos inside. When he discovered there wasn’t, he angrily trashed the unit. However, the Orb fell out of the box. Garret took it with him back to his shop, believing he could sell it. After Henry accidentally blew up Chuggy the Chip, Garret took him back to his shop, where Henry takes notice of the Orb. Despite the note warning them not to, they place the Orb in the Earth crystal, reopening the Earth portal. They follow the Orb’s pull to the mines, followed closely by Natalie and Dawn. All four are subsequently sucked into the portal.

Suddenly, an unknown device in the bastion alerted Malgosha to the Orb's return in the Overworld. A hologram of the Orb was projected by the surrounding pillars. She orders Steve to retrieve it for her or she will kill Dennis, attempting to trick him into believing he was in her custody. During the gang's first night, Garret accidentally gets the Earth crystal shot by a skeleton, causing it to shatter. The Orb, though, is left intact, and it resides in Garret’s possession as the others pull him into Henry’s tower. They are subsequently saved from the attacking mobs by Steve, who tells them that he will get them home, but he will need the Orb in return. Garret hands the Orb back to Henry before Steve leads them to Midport Village.

After Steve shows them his stash of equipment and items, Garret secretly takes the Orb from Henry and tells Steve that he can have the Orb, but only if he takes Garret to his secret cache of diamonds. Steve reluctantly accepts the deal, before the piglins, led by General Chungus, come to take the Orb and kill Steve. The Orb remains in Garret’s possession during their escape and subsequent journeys through the Redstone Mines.

Once they arrive at the woodland mansion, Garret reveals to Henry that he took the Orb from him earlier, causing Henry to berate him. After reviewing Steve’s plan to get the Earth crystal, Steve and Garret distract the illager with a Birthday Rap whilst Henry sneaks upstairs, where he is chased by two vindicators. He retrieves the crystal but is hypnotized and attacked by an enderman. After he kills it, he and the others escape from the mansion but are intercepted by Malgosha and the piglins, who are riding chained ghasts. Malgosha magically pulls the Orb into her staff and then departs.

Malgosha gives the Orb to Travis, telling him to place the Orb in the beacon atop the Nether portal. He does so, and the beacon becomes a night beacon, causing the skies to go dark and the atmosphere to allow piglins to survive in it. The Orb remains in this position throughout the war between the piglins and iron golems until Garret and Henry use a ghast to knock it out. As the piglins zombify, the New Hog attempts to retrieve it but is killed by the Super Iron Golem.

Later, Steve reopens the portal for the gang, holding the Orb. After deciding to join them, he enters the portal, taking the Orb with him. It is unknown what happened to the Orb after this.
