A hoglin is a pig-like beast ridden by piglins.
Appearance
These rectangular swine beasts, coming in at about 1.4 meters at the shoulders, are quadrupedal omnivores that inhabit the Nether's ecosystem. Hoglins have nougat colored skin, a thin layer of black fur including a thicker mane down their back, wide flat jaws, and big rectangular tusks. Similarly to their piglin cousins, hoglins possess burning bright eyes situated towards the front of their face. Their heads are positions on strong neck muscles, allowing them to trot and run at great speeds with ease.
Behavior
While not much is known about hoglins in the wild, it can be assumed they inhabit the Nether's crimson forest biomes, feeding off crimson fungus and carrion alike. In piglin society, however, hoglins are considered both as livestock and as steeds, being used as war animals that piglin soldiers can mount. They possess great speed and great strength, being able to launch opponents with ease, making them a useful asset in combat.
Just like piglins, hoglins are known to mysteriously zombify into zoglins while in the Overworld's atmosphere.
Biography
After Steve first entered the Nether, hoglins can be seen in establishing and background shots. Hoglins continue to cameo in most Nether scenes.
As Henry, Garrett, and Steve flee General Chungus' forces via their elytra wingsuits, a second party of piglin soldiers riding hoglins attempt to flank the group in the mountain range. While Steve shows some worry at their presence, the hoglin riders all die in the fiery explosion that ends the elytra chase.
During the piglins' invasion of the Overworld at Malgosha's command, many hoglin steeds are seen in the background being mounted by piglin soldiers. After the fight is finished and the piglin forces begin to zombify, it can be assumed that the hoglin steeds that survived the battle also began to zombify without the Orb of Dominance's power.
Trivia
- In Minecraft, piglins and hoglins have a primarily predator-prey relationship, as opposed to the more mutualistic relationship they have in the film.
- The concept of piglins riding hoglins into battle previously appeared in Minecraft Legends, where they were referred to by the name warboar.
