Villager Trade Rebalance
Note: Please convert the tables documenting the trades to use TradeTable and TradeLine instead of traditional tables.
Villager Trade Rebalance or Villager Trade Rebalancing is an experiment available in both Java Edition and Bedrock Edition that tweaks the trades of several villager professions and wandering traders in an attempt to make them more fair.
According to Mojang[1], librarian trades are considered to be too overpowered compared to using an enchanting table or searching for enchanted books. With the new changes, players must explore villages in different biomes and unlock villager tiers instead of relying on random chances. Wandering traders had unfair prices and didn't sell many useful items. With the new changes, their prices are lowered, more trades are added, and they can also purchase items from the player. Additionally, various explorer maps were given to cartographers to make it easier for players to locate specific biomes.
In Java Edition 1.21.5 and Bedrock Edition 1.21.70, the cartographer and wandering trader changes were fully implemented and moved out of the experiment.

Changes
World generation
- Increased the chance of generating enchanted books with Mending.
- Increased the chance of generating enchanted books with Unbreaking (level I to III).
- Increased the chance of generating enchanted books with Unbreaking (level I to III).
- Increased the chance of generating enchanted books with Efficiency (level I to V).
- Increased the chance of generating enchanted books with Quick Charge (level I to III).
Gameplay
- Changed the trading mechanism of librarians selling enchanted books.
- Instead of offering every possible enchanted book, librarians now offer specific enchanted books depending on which biome they come from.[note 1]
- All tradable enchanted books are now split to special books and common books.
- Special books have a specific enchantment with a fixed level, and are available only from master librarians with full XP.
- Common books have a specific enchantment without a fixed level, just like before.

- ↑ a b c The enchantment is chosen randomly from the "Common" enchantments listed on the table below according to the biome of the villagers. Every levels of these enchantment has equal chance to be chosen, meaning high-level enchantments are as likely as low-level enchantments. It is possible for a librarian to sell the same book more than once.
- ↑ In Java Edition only one is requested per trade because of MC-248042 — Librarian's book and quill trade is always discounted to 1 since they are unstackable.
- ↑ The enchantment is set from the "Special" enchantments listed on the table below according to the biome of the villagers. Unlike common enchantments, the level of enchantment is also defined.
The price of a book in emeralds depends on the enchantment level and "treasure" status. The minimum price of a book is given by 2 + 3 * (enchantment level), while the maximum price is 6 + 13 * (enchantment level), capped at 64. The possible values are 5–19 emeralds for Lvl I, 8–32 for Lvl II, 11–45 for Lvl III, 14–58 for Lvl IV, and 17–64 for Lvl V. For treasure enchantments the price is doubled (but still capped at 64). All values are equally probable.
- All enchantments used for the crossbow, fishing rod, trident, and mace have been removed from trading.

- Changed trades of armorers:
- Buying diamond armor now also requires a small amount of diamonds.
- Most master-level armorers buy iron blocks and pay 4 emeralds for them.
- Chainmail armor is exclusively sold by jungle and swamp armorers.
- The savanna armorer sells cursed diamond armor at reduced prices.
- The taiga armorer can swap one piece of diamond armor for another. Damaged, enchanted, and cursed armor are accepted, making 8 the minimum number of diamonds required for a full set.

Former changes
These changes were previously part of the experiment, but were fully implemented in Java Edition 1.21.5 and Bedrock Edition 1.21.70.
- Added seven new maps which cartographers can sell, depending on the biome they come from.[note 1]
- Village maps point to a village in a specific biome. Jungle explorer map points to a jungle pyramid. Swamp explorer map points to a swamp hut.

- ↑ The structure that the map leads to depends on the biome the villager is from. See the table above for more details. Each of the three possible maps are counted as independent trades, so a villager trading multiple maps is possible.
- ↑ a b in Java Edition, all copies of the map traded by a particular villager lead to the same structure. In worlds that do not have the structure, this trade is not offered. in Bedrock Edition, Cartographers adopting the profession in the Nether or the End do not offer explorer maps.
- ↑ The list of possible offers contains individual offers for each color, so multiple colors may be offered by the same villager as separate trades.

- ↑ a b Villages do not generate naturally in jungle or swamp biomes, but they rarely expand into these biomes when generate in the border(s) of other biomes. Usually, players must breed villagers or cure zombie villagers in these biomes to access their trades.
