Punch is an enchantment applied to bows that increases arrow knockback.
Obtaining
Punch can be obtained from enchantment tables, drops from mobs that have spawned in a raid, books obtained by fishing, monster room chests, librarian villagers, and non-village structure loot.
Punch I bows can be obtained by trading with an expert Fletcher.
Skeletons may spawn with a Punch I bow on Normal or Hard difficulty.
Usage
For each level, Punch adds approximately three blocks of distance to the base knockback. If commands are used to increase the level of Punch beyond 2, the additional knockback effect caps at 255. If the arrow is blocked by a shield, the punch effect doesn't apply. The punch effect still applies even if the arrow is blocked by a shield.
| Enchantment Level | Block without any special properties | Soul Sand | Ice | Packed Ice | Blue Ice |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| No enchantment | 1.985 | 0.894 | 4.053 | 4.053 | 4.2 |
| Punch l | 5.492 | 2.532 | 10.342 | 11.344 | 10.647 |
| Punch ll | 8.792 | 4.051 | 16.558 | 16.563 | 17.038 |
Any level of Punch changes the vertical knockback of arrows from 0.8125 blocks to 1.25 blocks.
Punch also affects arrows shot from a crossbow if applied using commands or an anvil in Creative mode. Punch has no effect on firework rockets fired from a crossbow.

Trivia
- Before firework rockets were given the ability to propel the elytra in 16w50a, a bow with the Punch enchantment was used to shoot the player mid-flight, so as to provide forward momentum and gain altitude.
