Hunk City Rampage is a fictional video game appearing in A Minecraft Movie, which Garrett Garrison is known to be fond of.

Appearance

The game is associated predominately with the colors cyan and pink, with the arcade cabinet being primarily pink. The protagonists of the game are christened on the logo and its sides. The characters are both muscular, "hunky" men with prominent afros and facial hair. On the sides are artwork of the characters alongside several lines and objects such as palm trees, office buildings, and a helicopter. The hoppers are bright yellow.

Gameplay

The exact mechanics of the game are unclear, but during the World Video Game Championship, the game is played head to head on two arcade cabinets. Each cabinet has two sets of controls for a maximum of 4 players total. The gameplay shown in the film is in the similar vein of late '80s beat 'em up games like Double Dragon, River City Ransom, with Streets of Rage style graphics, with characters being capable of punching, picking up objects, and picking up enemies. Among the techniques popular with professional players, the "Garbage Throw maneuver" is established to be incredibly difficult, Garrett's mastery of it granting him the nickname "Garbage Man."

At least two areas are shown, presumably the same level. The first is an alleyway with a tiled road at night, large boilers and vents visible. The second is a poor condition street during a rainstorm, with a visibly broken car and shattered windows. The ground is covered in puddles and cracks, with a trash can placed nearby. When a new high score is achieved within the game, the two characters will walk up and do a handshake. It is unclear if this occurs in normal gameplay or was specifically installed for the competition.

History

The game was played at the World Video Game Championship in 1989. Garrett Garrison would ultimately win the competition, setting him on the path to relish in his success, becoming incredibly washed up and unable to move on from it. He would later acquire his own cabinet and place it in Game Over World, where he would assertively play it and recreate his high score on at least one occasion.

Trivia

  • The name is most likely a reference to the 2012 video game Retro City Rampage, which uncoincidentally was also themed after 1980s pop culture, and featured Steve in a cameo appearance.
  • The onscreeen production of Hunk City Rampage was handled by Flux Animation in New Zealand.[1]
