The cartographer is a villager who appears as a minor character in A Minecraft Movie, with an expanded role in the tie-in books Uproar in Midport Village and A MINECRAFT MOVIE The Junior Novelization.

Appearance

Being a villager, the cartographer is a tall, humanoid figure with white skin, a brown unibrow, a long nose, and tall forehead. Distinguishing them from other villagers, they wear a golden monocle in their left eye, and a strap around their torso.

Personality

Like many others of their kind, the cartographer is a merchant, working alongside a desert villager to sell maps in Midport Village. Upon the death of their partner by the hands of a piglin, the cartographer is understandably mortified and flees, attempting to escape the situation by rowing away in a boat. However, they appear somewhat short sighted, getting stuck inside the boat from not being able to row without changing arm positions. They also appear fairly petty if not malicious, mocking Natalie for her inexperience placing blocks.

Biography

Upon emerging in the Overworld, Dawn and Natalie were desperate to find their way home to Earth. In order to do this, Steve explained they would need a new Earth Crystal to recreate the Earth Cube, the only one known being held in the Woodland Mansion. While assessing the situation, Dawn found the cartographer in the nearby marketplace, bringing it to Dawn's attention. However, before they could purchase a map, General Chungus was sent to raid the village. In the process, the cartographer's assistant was killed by being shot in the nose by a crossbow-wielding piglin.

Fleeing to a dock, the cartographer tried to escape the disaster by using a boat, but Dawn and Natalie still needed them. In an attempt to reach them, Natalie cleverly removed a plank from the dock, and uncleverly tried to manifest "boat magic" by just throwing it at the water. This brought great schadenfreude to the cartographer, causing the two to decide they'll find their way organically.

Once the conflict with the piglins was resolved, the cartographer was seen helping the heroes back to the Earth Portal, followed by another one.

Led into the village, Steve was quick to befriend the four newcomers from Earth, showing them things such as an iron golem and his lava chicken shack. After an amusing incident with Garrett, Dawn and Natalie found a cartographer speaking with a pale snowy villager. Somehow, they came to the conclusion they had a map back to their home, and were delighted to work with them. Before they could negotiate however, the piglin army arrived and began to run amuck in the town, Dawn and Natalie picking up a hoe and shovel to defend themselves.

Following the cartographer, they discovered it was escaping the battle by boat, rowing down a stream. Following, the two discussed whether they'd find the others, eager to meet back up with the cartographer. Little did they know, Steve, Garrett, and Henry were flying just overhead, using elytra.
