API testing capes

This feature is exclusive to Java Edition.

 

Various API testing capes have occasionally appeared on Mojang's servers. These were used to test the Java Edition cape API. Some of these were placed as a response to players discovering previous testing capes.

These are not official capes and cannot be obtained, and may have been removed from the servers since. They are only here for documentation purposes.

Test cape	size-m cape[1]				A cape that has similar color palette to the sniffer has been found on Mojang's staging texture server and on Mojang's production texture server. It was added to Mojang's staging texture server on October 10, 2023 and added to Mojang's production texture server 7 days later on October 17, 2023. The cape was first seen on 2 accounts on Mojang's staging server database.
Snail cape	-				This cape with a design resembling a snail and an elytra resembling vines was uploaded to a Mojang staging server on April 17, 2024 at around 9:00 EST by a Mojang employee working on the cape API at the time[2] Its design is most likely inspired by the employee's statue model of a snail.[3]
ICU cape #1	-				This cape was made and added to the player profile made by the same Mojang employee working on and monitoring the cape API on April 17, 2024 and was changed from the Snail cape design to this ICU design on April 17, 2024 just before 17:00 EST as a response to the discoverers (people that found the Snail cape and ICU capes) sending API requests to the same player profile that had the Snail cape.[4]
ICU cape #2	-				This design was made and added to the player profile made by the same Mojang employee working on and monitoring the cape API on April 17, 2024. It was changed to this design few minutes later the ICU cape #1 design was uploaded to the player profile made by the Mojang employee.[5]
Frog cape	-				This design was most likely inspired by the developers posting frog images before announcing snapshots on Wednesdays, or by the designer's statue models of frogs.[6][7] This cape was made by the same Mojang employee that made the Snail cape. This cape was first shown off as a cropped screenshot on X.[8]
