Minecraft x SpongeBob SquarePants is a merchandise collaboration between Minecraft and the SpongeBob SquarePants animated television franchise.

Background

SpongeBob SquarePants is a multimedia franchise, primarily revolving around an animated comedy television series. The show centers around SpongeBob SquarePants, an anthropomorphic sea sponge and his adventures working as a fry cook at the Krusty Krab. Among the main cast are his best friend Patrick Star, grumpy next door neighbor Squidward Tentacles, a land squirrel scientist named Sandy Cheeks, and his penny pinching boss Mr. Krabs. The main antagonist of the series is Plankton, the former friend turned archenemy of Mr. Krabs, who aspires to steal his secret formula.

The series is among the most popular Nicktoons, with SpongeBob being considered Nickelodeon's mascot and receiving more episodes than any other series. In 2004, the show would be adapted into a feature film, The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie, centered around SpongeBob and Patrick going on an odyssey to retrieve the crown of King Neptune. In the years since its release, many other spin-offs and adaptations would follow, including The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water and The Patrick Star Show.

Marketplace releases

SpongeBob SquarePants

Releasing on July 26, 2022 and developed by Spark Universe, SpongeBob SquarePants is an adventure map released on the Marketplace. The map concerns a simple story where the player must go on several small adventures with SpongeBob, his friends, and Plankton to achieve the "Best Day Ever." On April 26, 2023, an update was released introducing additional missions featuring Pearl and the Flying Dutchman. Forty skins are included in the map, including two original characters, Goofy and Goober.

SpongeBob SquarePants Add-On

To celebrate the 25th anniversary of the franchise, an add-on was released on August 20, 2024, again developed by Spark Universe. This release allows players to use iconic items and mobs of characters in any survival world, introducing many unique gameplay features such as placing pre-built structures.

Trivia

• During the collaboration, at least two different versions of a meme featuring Squidward looking out a window while SpongeBob and Patrick had fun were produced. The first was created in promotion of Minecraft Now^[2], while the second the add-on.^[3]
  • Similarly, two versions of a meme where SpongeBob gets off a chair were also made.^[4][5][6]
