The 555 timer IC is an integrated circuit (chip) used in a variety of timer, pulse generation and oscillator applications. The part is still in widespread use, thanks to its low price and ubiquity. The 556 timer is simply two 555 timers in a single package.

The timer IC is a monolithic (chip) used in a variety of timer, pulse generation and oscillator applications. The part is still in widespread use, thanks to its ease of use, low price and good stability. In 2017, some estimates amounted to a billion 555 timers produced annually. - Wikipedia

It can be found in a variety of versions, both and , metal or plastic packaging. It even comes in a dual package as the 556 Timer, providing two independently programmable 555 timers. There is a less common 558 Quad timer, but it has some pins of the 4 internal 555 timers connected together internally.

Is the NE555 the IC I need, and if not, what do I replace it with?

I've noticed that whilst I have a well-known solution using an NE555, that IC doesn't fulfill my needs perfectly. Others have told me that the NE555 is very rarely an appropriate solution to one of the problems it's being used for. What are the…

555N vs. 555P? One works, the other does not!

I've implemented a water level indicator using a 555 timer. It works fine when I use 555N, but the output is always high when I replace it with 555P. I don't understand. I have tried four 555Ps to rule out the possibility of a faulty IC, but it…

Generating a delayed pulse with one 555 timer upon powering up the circuit

This is a very beginner's question - I apologize if this is some trivial extension of a known practice. Can I use one 555 timer without any extra transistors/IC to generate a delayed pulse as shown below upon powering up the circuit? The intended…

What are the disadvantages of using a 555 timer as a resistance to frequency converter?

Since we know that a 555 timer configured as an astable multivibrator depends on the resistance the timing capacitor sees, what stops people from using a 555 as an ohmmeter? How does the accuracy compare to using a traditional ADC to sense…

555 trigger frequency signal

So, I'm remembering that back in school, I managed to make a 555 signal create a tone signal, and that another 555 could trigger the 555, such that I had a variable toned signal that could be pulsed. IE, I could change the frequency, and pulse the…
