Ubuntu MATE is an official flavor of Ubuntu, using the MATE desktop environment. Use this tag for questions specific to this flavor.

Ubuntu MATE is an official flavor that uses MATE Desktop, a continuation of the GNOME 2 environment that offers a more traditional desktop metaphor than Unity or GNOME Shell.

The project's developers stated aims include offering accessibility to all users, and a suitable alternative for older, less powerful hardware as well as new devices.

Ubuntu MATE 16.04 and earlier still use GTK+ 2, but in 16.10 will move to GTK+ 3. The current version of MATE Desktop has full GTK+ 3 support, and GTK+ 3 can be installed in Ubuntu 16.04.
