Following the release of A Minecraft Movie, the scene of Steve forebodingly yelling "Chicken Jockey!" became a viral meme. The popularity of the meme led to a real-life trend at the screenings of the movie.
Background
Within the film, there is a running gag of Steve excitedly or eccentrically shouting the names of various subjects that were previously established in Minecraft. These include ender pearl, flint and steel, water bucket, crafting table, elytra wingsuit, and the Nether. In one particular scene, Steve and Garrett find themselves in a dire situation, forced to compete in an illager fighting ring. Garrett tries to ready himself for the action, but is confused when he sees a chicken. A crate opens above him, releasing a baby zombie, which Steve warns is actually a powerful jockey.
Prior to A Minecraft Movie, viral or loud audience reactions were not uncommon. The Rocky Horror Picture Show was considered a failure upon release, but gained a cult following over the years, with many interacting with the film at various iconic moments. Similar circumstances have happened to films such as The Room and Plan 9 from Outer Space.[1] In 2022, the film Morbius was rereleased to theaters in an attempt to capitalize off of negative memes mocking the film, only for both releases to underperform.[2][3] A similar meme for the Despicable Me spin-off film Minions: The Rise of Gru happened later in the year, where many showed up to the film dressed as "gentleminions," however this ended up adding to the film's success.[4]
Phenomenon

Following the release of a trailer for a film, the scene became very popular to quote and spoof, with many viral edits being released. It got to such an extreme amount of popularity that audience members would loudly cheer, shout, or throw food, drinks, flour and toilet paper after Steve said the character's name. At one showing in Provo, Utah, one moviegoer brought a live chicken into the theater and proudly held it up when the viral quote was said.[5] At another screening in Melbourne, Australia, another teenager pulled the pin off of a fire extinguisher, suffocating movie watchers.[6] The disruptive nature of the trend, in addition to other reported cases of disruptive audience behavior at showings of the movie, prompted numerous theaters to issue warnings to moviegoers to not engage in such behavior in addition to punishing violators by asking them to leave or, in severe cases, contacting law enforcement.[7][8][9][10]
At one point footage of an incident where a firework was shot in the theater was misattributed to the meme, instead happening in a screening for the film Tiger 3.[11][12]
In an effort to tone down overly rowdy behavior and encourage basic cinema etiquette, showings began starting with a short PSA disclaimer before the start of the film reminding attendees to be kind and respectful and to not throw popcorn buckets during the movie.[13] Other theaters installed posters to discourage behavior.[14] Many began drawing similarities between the viral moment and the interactive screenings of cult films like The Rocky Horror Picture Show.[15][16][17] The phenomenon grew so common that certain theaters even began ordering ushers with scheduled calculations of when the scene would play.[18][19][20][21]
Publicity
The virality of the scene, driven by audience reception, grew to such popularity that several Minecraft social media accounts and their collaborators commented on the trend, including Minecraft,[22][23] Minecraft Dungeons,[24] Element Animation,[25][26] and McDonald's.[27] At one point, it was even used to promote the sale of Minecraft products on Amazon.[28] In addition, several unaffiliated companies made jokes about the phenomenon, such as FedEx[29] and Pizza Hut.[30] The Chicken Jockey phenomenon became the premise of a bit during a monologue on The Tonight Show starring Jimmy Fallon on April 8, 2025.[31]
After the Chicken Jockey scene went viral, Regal Theaters announced a one night “Chicken Jockey Screening” event on April 20, 2025. For the event, attendees were encouraged to "dress up as [their] favorite Minecraft characters" and be wild.[32] The event was not an official studio marketing push, but a response from the theater chain capitalizing on the reception of the character.[33] Several videos and streams of the scene and related media would be posted to official social media accounts, always making reference to the meme.[34][35]
On April 15, 2025, Jens Bergensten joked about the prospect of people dressing up as the character for Halloween.[36] On May 11, 2025, Chris Houghton, a co-creator of the Disney animated series Big City Greens, was asked if the show’s main character Cricket would react to the scene. He remarked that he would bring his own chickens to the theater and become a “Cricket jockey” himself.[37]
In Java Edition 25w20a, released on May 13, 2025, "Chicken Jockey!" was added as a splash text, referencing the line from the movie. Another reference would be added with the introduction of the Music Disc Lava Chicken, which is dropped by chicken jockeys. Prior to the release of a Youtooz figure based off the chicken jockey mob, several references to the meme were made.[38][39][40][41] Following the release of the film on the streaming service HBO Max, a category promoting the film was added, comparing other films such as Scott Pilgrim vs. the World to it for their shared "Chicken Jokey [sic] Energy."[42]
