Insulated-gate bipolar transistor, voltage-driven power transistor with fast switching times

IGBTs have fast switching times, and are not spec'd for operation in an analog region. For these reasons, they are typically used in switching applications, such as switched-mode power supplies and PWM motor drives. They switch slower than FETs, and thus have higher switching losses. But IGBTs are available in higher voltage ranges than FETs, making them the only solution for many applications.

What is the use of the fourth leg, the one with igbt in series with the diode, in the infineon power module?

The circuit shown below is the schematic of infineon PIM module. I am specifically interested in FP15R12W1T4. From the schematic I could understand all elements other than the 4th leg which has an igbt in series with a diode. I am new to this field.…

Replacing transistors in 110 kW power cabinet

Power cabinet 110 kW (3P). One of the IGBT transistors (400A) on the bus is broken. I heard that it's necessary to change all three transistors. And that it's important that all three transistors should have absolutely identical characteristics. Is…

IGBT VCEsat maximum rating dependence on VGE

Building an application with IGBTs up to 1000V and using IXGA20N120A3 rated at 1200V. However datasheet states that this rating is for a Vge = 0V. We are driving the IGBT with -12V during turn off to avoid self turn on and was wandering if the…

How this voltage resonant soft-switching IGBT works?

In this voltage resonant soft-switching IGBT: 1) When IGBT turns off, what is the reason why Vce slowly(sinusoidally) increases after current turns off? Was it because the stored voltage in L1 is slowly discharged so that Vce will not abruptly…

Reverse blocking IGBTs no longer available, why?

I've been looking at IGBTs for a power project. Primarily since they can handle high voltage and have decent reverse blocking capabilities. Two devices I'm familiar with are Punch Through (PT) and Non-Punch Through (NPT). A third one was offered a…

What causes a three terminal short circuit failure in IGBT

A pair of IGBTs that I was using in a high frequency application failed with 3 terminal short. The devices are rated 650V that's well higher than the operated voltage of 200 V. Snubbers were working effective in the circuit. So, the failure could…

How soft-switching works in these circuit?

I read that one of the major power losses of an IGBT circuit is its switching losses. In order to overcome it, soft-switching is used. The book gave an example with the circuit diagram: This is know as "soft switching". The voltage or current…
