UM 24.04 was installed by a friend when he gave me a free Lenovo Thinkpad T430s, and I do not know everything he did.

I just noticed that my laptop is in a guest session.

I would like to have a "regular account".

Can someone help me?

1. Gaining access to an account with administrator privileges

If you only have a guest account, you will need the one who installed the computer to give you the password of a regular account on the system that has administrator privileges ("sudo") to change system configuration. From your guest account, there is nothing you can do.

That said, when you have physical access to the computer, it is possible to reset the user password. This way, you could gain access to the main account yourself. It becomes more technical. Information is available elsewhere on AskUbuntu or can be found in tutorials on the web.

2. Editing your current guest account

Once you can login to an account with administration privileges, you can use the "User" panel in "Settings" to edit the guest account such that 1) it also acquires root acccess and 2) it can only be accessed with a password.
