I am referring to Veritasium's video on path integration, particularly, the last experiment demonstrated.

What is claimed? The claim is that specially-prepared surface can reflect laser rays even when the laser is not directed towards that surface.

In other words, they have a laser stick pointed at a point, and claim the area outside of that point is not illuminated. Then they put a specially-prepared film in the non-illuminated area and, magically that film starts to reflect laser light.

If this experiment shows indeed what is claimed, it apparently means that

  • Laser communication can be intercepted by an agent who is not on the communication line, perhaps miles away.

  • One can steal energy from a laser or a general light ray while not being on the path of that ray.

So, is the claim made in this demonstration true?
