Are they not actually just "really, really deep"? It seems like all the descriptions of them being infinite are actually people actually just saying they are "nearly infinite," or seemingly using the term "infinite" unscientifically because it's so deep it "might as well be infinite," but in reality it's not?

There's not an infinitely large amount of mass, there is a finite amount of mass being crammed into a zero dimensional point. The result is a point with finite mass, but infinite density.
