Rabbits have been domesticated for hundreds of years, primarily as farm animals, but began to rise in interest as pets and show animals in the 19th century. Depending on the region, rabbits as pets may be the third most popular (mammalian) behind cats and dogs.

The American Rabbit Breeders Association lists 47 breeds of domesticated rabbit, with popular pet breeds that include the mini lop, netherland dwarf, or the jersey wooly amongst many others.
