Questions tagged [rectifier]

These are part of AC to DC conversion. A half-wave rectifier keeps only the positive part of the signal. A full-wave rectifier also keeps the negative part, but flips it to make it positive too.

What are the advantages of full wave bridge rectifier with capacitors parallel to diodes?

I found a circuit where in the classical Graetz rectifier capacitors were added in parallel to each diode. It looked something like this: After the rectifier itself, there was the usual huge capacitor and regulator and so on. So why the smaller…

Is a half-wave rectifier particularly hard on a transformer?

In the book Practical Electronics for Inventors, 3rd Ed., the authors recommend against using half-wave rectifiers because they're inefficient and cause "...the core to become polarized and to saturate in one direction." (Page 395.) Is this a valid…

How does this rectifier work?

In a car battery charger, I found a strange rectifier. Can someone explain to me how does it work? Here I have a transformer which is unmarked. By measuring resistance between its output terminals, I determined that the plus cable is connected to…

Full wave rectifier vs full wave bridge rectifier

What is the difference between the full wave rectifier and the full wave bridge rectifier? In other words what do we gain if we use the bridge? As far as I know both do the same thing while the bridge is using two more diodes making it more…

What is the maximum frequency a bridge rectifier can handle?

I was designing a basic power supply with frequency ranging from 50-60Hz and thought about using this bridge rectifier KBPC50005. I cant seem to understand the range of input frequencies it can take, its application notes have graphs made for 60Hz…

Why is the negative terminal connected to both transformers in this half-wave rectifier?

I found the image below in an old book about vacuum tube rectifiers. Could someone explain why the negative terminal of the load is connected to the 6.3V transformer? I understand why it would be connected to the 350V transformer but not the other…

Why such low voltage across my filtered half-wave rectifier?

Essentially my problem is this: I built a simple half-wave rectifier with some capacitive filtering, but I can't account for why my voltage is so low. Below is the circuit I built: Vs is 5V amplitude, 10 Vpp, 60 Hz, sine wave. Using newer Tektronix…

Chassis potential of an old transformerless valve / tube TV

Long, long ago, some friends and I in school used to try to repair old valve (tube) TVs. Most commonly the repair was just by cannibalizing another old set; we did not have any budget for spares but we brought some sets back to life. Many of…

average calculation vs rms calculation in rectifiers

In rectifier \$R_{load}\$ we calculate \$P_{load}=V_{avg}\cdot I_{avg}\$ why cant we take \$V_{rms}\$ and \$I_{rms}\$ as we are taking like in electrical calculations and also what is the use of calculating rms value in rectifier \$R_{load}\$?
