Has anyone ever performed, or proposed, a real experiment to directly test Einstein's light clock thought experiment? Is this realistic?

Yes, I proposed a visionary and far reaching experiment of exactly that kind in a funding application I recently submitted to a grant-awarding body the name of which I am unable to mention owing to confidentiality conditions applying to the submissions process.

The details of the proposed experiment are highly technical, as you will readily appreciate if you have any familiarity with my work. In layman’s terms I propose to fire a laser at a corner-cube in the Sea of Tranquility through a discrete hole drilled through the roof of a first class carriage on a Japanese bullet train (or should that be discreet?). The instants of the firing of the laser and the detection of the reflected light will be displayed via two LED lights placed directly against the window of my first class seat.

At carefully calculated points along the fast section of track between Sonso and Kwalei I will erect arrays of densely packed photo detectors tuned to the frequency of the LEDs and each coupled to its own atomic clock. I’m sure you can figure out the rest of the plan yourself.

Trusted insiders tell me that the chair of the funding committee could not be more pleased with my proposals, so that obstacle can be assumed overcome. The key remaining challenge will be to get a window seat before the pushy American tourists hog them all.
