My question is related to this one, this one, and this one (pointed out thanks to Yukterez below).

If I put a gigalightyear (1 billion ly) long spring into our current universe, what would happen?

My prediction is that the spring would stretch out with the expanding universe until the restoring force of the spring grows enough to resist further stretching, at which point it would sit in equilibrium. To the extent this question relies on assuming specific properties for the spring, please state the assumptions and how they affect the conclusion.
