In electromagnetism, there are two kinds of fields, the ones that includes the response of the material $(\mathbf{D},\mathbf{B})$ and the one that only include the contribution of the free charges $(\mathbf{E},\mathbf{H})$.

One thing that is troubling me is the asymmetry, why do we use $(\mathbf{E},\mathbf{B})$ in the Lorentz force or even in the field tensor instead of $(\mathbf{D},\mathbf{B})$? It makes more sense to take into account the total field which includes the response so why not choosing $\mathbf{D}$ over $\mathbf{E}$?

Maybe I am mistaken about something.
