hoping someone can help as can’t find any research.

A week ago we found a tiny caterpillar on our garage door, I decided I wanted to make a home for him and watch the process, once turned into a moth to release him. I done a lot of research on honing them and found it to be an angle shades caterpillar. He has a great home, and has everything needed that I’ve read online (kitchen paper, soil, lots of twigs/branches and lots of fresh leaves that they like to eat) At first he was eating loads, moving etc .. a few days ago, we noticed he was on a leaf and was leaking blackish liquid from top half of his body.. I was told this is most likely them pushing out their guts to process into the pupate stage, since then, he has not moved at all and hasn’t eaten at all but he is still alive but looks lifeless? I haven’t handled him with my hands at all. Is this normal? Does not eating ready to pupate a long process?

Thank you!
