2016 Chevy Cruze Gen 1, 1.4T. 60K miles.
Starting last fall, car has intermittently declined to start. Instead, it shows a "Service Theft Deterrent System" message. I don't see a pattern to these events. We have two flip key/fobs, one with a new battery. Both work or fail together. So far, the problem has always eventually cleared - possibly just after a seemingly-random time has passed; or, maybe after performing various 'Simon Says' rituals, locking and unlocking the car in different ways.
There's a lot I don't understand about this, but right now I have just a couple of questions:
- Is there a name for this car's theft-deterrent system? Passkey III?
- Is it the case that various 'modules' (BCM, ECM, ..) do a security handshake, to confirm they've all been coded with the same VIN, and that a mismatch will trip the fault?
- I'd appreciate any guidance on what sort of scan tool can dig out more details about this problem
- Is there an override or secret handshake for the Gen 1? (As noted, we have good keys.)
