I've been trying a few times now to glue this plastic piece back onto the shifter, but it keeps coming off so I am looking for a permanent solution -- which might include an aftermarket replacement, if I only could figure out how to get the darn thing off.

How do you get the darn thing off?

How do you find technical manuals for this sort of thing, generally speaking? Used to be, Haynes manuals were a thing for this, but these days it seems all locked away for professional mechanics. I tried looking at http://www.volvopartswebstore.com/ but they only list V70 up to 2010, which looks very different.

Your comment is correct. The plastic part is not available separately; you'll have to buy the knob itself. For a 2014 V70 with your trim level, the Volvo part number is 31259408 at around 135€ plus taxes.

Such knobs without a reverse-gear release lever are usually just screwed on top of the shifter rod like a glorified cap nut.
