The City of London is often confused with Greater London, but they are distinct entities.

The City was, once, the whole of London, going back to Roman times. What is now Greater London was a collection of separate towns and villages (plus the City of Westminster) which, over time, merged into a large conurbation before being organised as boroughs and combined into the county of Greater London in 1965.
