I have been selected to serve on a US federal grand jury for 18 months (or more?), once per week, and start next week. As far as I can tell, the process was essentially random and there was no way I could get out of this. The court seemed to only excuse people who would have financial difficulties serving for that length of time. My employer has said that they will pay my full salary to attend this, but they've been quite stingy in the past and I'm skeptical that they will continue to pay my full salary as the months drag on. The length of service seems extremely excessive to me.
Given that I'm not happy with my job for various reasons (stinginess being one of them), I've been applying for others and think I'll eventually get a better offer. Unfortunately, the vast majority of jobs I could take would require moving out of the court's jurisdiction. So now I'm wondering if the federal court would allow me to move out of their jurisdiction. Is there any precedent for US federal courts preventing grand jurors from moving to take better jobs?
