I don't know what the deal is, whether Chromecast is at fault or my other streaming service Spotify, or perhaps my Xfinity router using WPA3 Personal encryption is the problem. But it just seems like often when I try to cast to a single Chromecast Audio or a group that combines Chromecast Audio, Google Home, and Nest Hub Max devices at home, my streaming services start misbehaving and not responding to the play button. It's happened even with just one Chromecast Audio as the target device.

  • The Chromecast icon graphic in the streaming app will flutter indefinitely as if it's trying to connect, yet often won't complete the connection.
  • Sometimes neither in the streaming app nor in Google Home, I can't manage play stop and start nor even change the sound volume after a song has started.
  • Other times my play/stop/volume-up/down commands seem to be delayed. An unreliable workaround I found is to reboot my Samsung Galaxy S25 Ultra smartphone, and then I can Chromecast again on the first try. But later on, the unreliability with casting audio returns. Has anyone else experienced all these inconsistencies, and what could be done about it?

One such single Chromecast Audio device that gave me such trouble today is this one called "Dad's Office Speaker":

Cast firmware: 1.56.467166

MAC address: A4:77:33:xx:xx:xx

Country code: US

IP address: 192.168.1.xx

I think you are expecting too much to get such a mix of devices to work together.

Seeing that Chromecast Audio was officially discontinued in 2019, I think you really need to replace it with something newer

From Google discontinues Chromecast Audio

Our product portfolio continues to evolve, and now we have a variety of products for users to enjoy audio. We have therefore stopped manufacturing our Chromecast Audio products. We will continue to offer assistance for Chromecast Audio devices, so users can continue to enjoy their music, podcasts and more.

  • What could help is - try switching to WPA2/WPA3 mixed mode instead of WPA3, if your router allows it.

  • Since rebooting the phone works for a while, perhaps the phone is putting the app(s) to sleep.
