Ubuntu 25.04 has been available for a while now.

When upgrading my Ubuntu 24.10 from Software Updater, after doing:

sudo apt update
sudo apt upgrade

I am told "The software on this computer is up-to-date", which is not the case. Note the settings are:

  • Subscribed to: all updates.
  • Automatically check for updates: daily.
  • When there are other updates: Display immediately.
  • Notify me of a new Ubuntu version: For any new version.

When upgrading from the command line, I get:

> sudo do-release-upgrade
[sudo] password for pietrom:
Checking for a new Ubuntu release
No new release found.

On Ubuntu website, I could download the new ISO, but what I need is an upgrade.

I can reproduce this in a Ubuntu 24.10 container. Well, Canonical, what happened there? This is documented to work!

Anyways, sudo do-release-upgrade -d allows you to update to 25.04. The -d is for "development version", and usually only necessary before the next version of Ubuntu is released.

https://www.gamingonlinux.com/2025/04/ubuntu-25-04-upgrades-halted-due-to-kubuntu-users-getting-a-broken-desktop/ Here's the reason actually. In my experience

  1. You almost never get an upgrade as soon as a new version is released. Upgrading is much more error prone process then installing from scratch, so it takes time to ensure, that it's correct.
  2. Upgrading before the official upgrade is available is not a very good idea, especially if you are not experimenting with Linux, but using it as your main OS.

On Kubuntu web page I found this note:

Note: For upgrades from 24.10, there may a delay of a few hours to days between the official release announcements and the Ubuntu Release Team enabling upgrades.

No further details are given...
