I am running:

  • Linux 5.15.0-136-generic #147-Ubuntu SMP x86_64 GNU/Linux
  • Ubuntu 22.04.5 LTS

This problem started occurring about a day after an apt upgrade on google-chrome, but I don't think it originates in the browser.

In chrome, if I upload a file (including attaching a file to a message to send in gmail), the browser crashes immediately after picking the file; chrome://crashes shows one crash report for each of the crashes In firefox, clicking the button to upload a file doesn't crash the browser, but does nothing: the file chooser doesn't even appear.

I read that under gnome (which I'm using), google-chrome uses FileChooser in libgtk. In case a library file might have been damaged, I ran the following script to check that the files have the same MD5 checksum that they did when installed. This reports no problems:

cd /
for f in \
    /var/lib/dpkg/info/libgtk2.0-0:amd64.md5sums \
    /var/lib/dpkg/info/libgtk2.0-bin.md5sums \
    /var/lib/dpkg/info/libgtk2.0-common.md5sums \
    /var/lib/dpkg/info/libgtk-3-0:amd64.md5sums \
    /var/lib/dpkg/info/libgtk-3-bin.md5sums \
    /var/lib/dpkg/info/libgtk-3-common.md5sums \
    /var/lib/dpkg/info/libgtk3-perl.md5sums \
    /var/lib/dpkg/info/libgtk-4-1:amd64.md5sums \
    /var/lib/dpkg/info/libgtk-4-common.md5sums
do
    md5sum -c --quiet $f
done

Any hints or tips would be much appreciated

This morning (2025-04-08 10:55 PDT) "apt list --upgradable" offered: binutils-common binutils-x86-64-linux-gnu binutils gcc-10-base google-chrome-stable libbinutils libctf-nobfd0 libctf0 libexpat1-dev libexpat1

I ran 'sudo apt upgrade', and the problem is now resolved. But I don't know which package upgrade fixed the problem.

I had reported the problem to the google forum as https://issues.chromium.org/issues/408598685, and I have also reported that it was resolved with the upgrade.

The problem still persists in firefox (ie, clicking on the FileChooser icon does nothing). It may be that an API change in one of the libraries requires complementary changes in each of the browswers.

@j0h, thanks for your help!
