I have had performance issues with Ubuntu 24.04 recently and have unsuccessfully reinstalled the OS five or six times. The same problem occurs. All goes according to plan until the installation is finished and I reboot the machine. I login using my standard ID and then enter the correct password only to receive a message that I am "not listed" - the machine doesn't know who I am. When I restart the machine I get a message on the screen that there are "other users logged in". Since I can't log in, I can't do anything with the installation. When I reboot and use the recovery option, looking for the screen that gives me the option to drop to a root prompt, it's there but I cannot actually select that option - the cursor won't move down. There's some problem there. After I reload the OS using the "try" option I'm able to look into the installed version and, hopefully, fix the user problem - by resetting or changing the user id, if I knew where to look for it. Can anyone point out how to proceed from here, please? Where to look and whether there are any special tricks I need to apply. Thanks - Neil

User login info for all Unix/Linux systems is kept in /etc/{passwd,shadow,group,gshadow}, depending, of course, on /etc/nsswitch.conf.
