How to install the dependencies of a .deb package installed with dpkg?

I am aware that this is a duplicate question, but my issue is a little bit different. I run sudo dpkg install package.deb, which yields dpkg: dependency problems prevent.... Next, I run sudo apt-get -f install, but this just uninstalls the partial version of the package from the file instead of grabbing the dependencies.
