I received a notice to install a new version of my Ubuntu. Accepted and installed the new version. After the install finished, Ubuntu worked perfectly. When I turned off my computer and restarted the computer I no longer had the dual boot displayed on the monitor to be able to boot up Windows 8. What can I do to fix this problem?

You need to examine the Master Boot record of disk drive to see what's going on. I suspect you over wrote the old grub install which allowed you to dual boot. You need some expertise with disk managers to see if the old Windows partition is still there. If the Windows partition is no longer there than Windows is lost. If the old parition exists you should be able to mount it in Ubuntu to at least recover the data. This takes some knowledge of disks and mounting with in Ubuntu using the mount command / fdisk or other disk partitioning tools. You could try looking in the /etc/default/grub file to see if the Windows partition is referenced. I would do some searches on what a grub file should look like in a working dual boot system. It may be a matter of just updating grub in the MBR as was mentioned earlier but it won't do any good unless the /etc/default/grub file has all the parameters necessary to dual boot windows AND the windows partition still exists.
