I have an HP 8770w Elitebook purchased in 2013 that I used to run Windows 10. Since the Elitebook does not support Windows 11, I decided to use the HP for Ubuntu. I downloaded Ubuntu 22.04 iso and burned it to a USB drive via balenaEtcher. I put the USB drive in the HP, booted and did the Install Ubuntu option to erase whatever was there and do a clean install, which it completed.
When I rebooted, I got the above error as well. My fix was to reboot hitting the esc key repeatedly until I got the option menu and select the option (I think F11) to change the Boot Option from Legacy to EFI with CSM. HP warns you that this can create dire things, but I did it anyway because I'm thinking any new OSes I'd install will use UEFI and CSM for compatibility mode cannot hurt. I also changed the boot order to be Boot Manager, esata drive, USB, etc. Secure Erase is off. I rebooted. The reboot spewed out a series of communication errors, but then, Ubuntu came up. I should warn you though if you do this, there appears to be no way to go back, as the F11 option disappeared. (note: you can always download the BIOS from HP and reinstall) If smarter sages say this is a stupid idea, I humbly beg your forgiveness, meanwhile I'm enjoying Ubuntu. On my way to Kubernetes.
