I tried to do a dual boot but I can't get into Ubuntu. Can I just wipe everything out and just load Ubuntu? I have a Sony VAIO laptop. I don't really need Windows for anything do I? would I have to format and then install from USB?

We can not decide this for you but there is a method where you can have both with just using Ubuntu as your single operating system:
- Install Ubuntu
- Install either virtualbox or vmplayer
- Install Windows inside virtualbox/vmplayer.
It looks like this:
Do not forget to backup data you need to keep.
